Description

The commit adds explicit bounds/overflow checks in the QAIC mmap path (drivers/accel/qaic/qaic_data.c) to prevent out-of-bounds remapping when mapping a QAIC buffer into user space. Specifically, qaic_gem_object_mmap now computes remap_start, remap_end, and length with overflow-safe helpers (check_add_overflow, check_sub_overflow) and clamps the remapped length to fit within the user VMA. If the computed remap would overflow the VMA, it returns an error (-EINVAL). This mitigates a memory-safety vulnerability where an mmap remap could run beyond the user’s VMA, potentially corrupting kernel or DMA memory or leaking information. The triage notes list other changes (reservation handling, cleanup, etc.) as stability/correctness fixes; the security-relevant portion is the QAIC mmap bounds/overflow fix.

Proof of Concept

PoC (regression/test approach): - Preconditions: A QAIC-backed DRM GEM object with a scatterlist containing an entry whose length would overflow the user VMA if remapped naively. This requires creating or obtaining a QAIC BO with a large sg length that extends beyond the target user mapping size. - Step 1: Expose a DRM device node (e.g., /dev/dri/card0) that hosts the QAIC GEM objects. - Step 2: Create or acquire a QAIC GEM object whose sg length is larger than the user VM area you intend to mmap (for example, a VMA of 0x1000 bytes but sg->length of 0x2000). - Step 3: In user space, mmap() the QAIC GEM object with a size/offset that would map into the VMA, triggering the driver’s qaic_gem_object_mmap path. - Step 4: Observe behavior on unpatched kernels: remap_pfn_range could be called with a length that exceeds the VMA bounds, potentially causing memory corruption or leakage. On a patched kernel (as in this commit), the code clamps length to vma_end - remap_start and returns -EINVAL if the mapping would overflow, preventing the overrun. - Step 5: Verify that the mmap call fails with -EINVAL in the patched kernel when the sg length would overflow the VMA, and that with the vulnerable (pre-patch) kernel the mmap could succeed or cause memory access beyond the VMA (regression/test under controlled environment). Note: This PoC is intended for regression testing in a controlled lab environment and requires kernel/userland setup that exposes QAIC GEM objects via DRM. Exact device/node names and IOCTL semantics depend on the kernel configuration and DRM/QAIC driver version.
